In the West people are dying for saying what they want. In Saudi Arabia, a Muslim man suffered 5 years in a hellhole followed by 1000 lashes with a 7 foot bamboo pole the circumference of a finger in bouts of 50 at a time for saying little more than we say here every day. Grim stuff, but already the West’s media have decided upon self-censorship in all matters concerning images of the prophet for the simple reason that they fear a jihadist backlash. Intimidation pure and simple. Stalin and Hitler repressed the press with something similar, but then it was in the midst of vicious totalitarian regimes. Our press decided to do this in liberal-conservative regimes, which, in a sense, is even more sinister. May we never forget that saying what we want here and elsewhere may come with a price, and may we all be prepared to stand up for the right to do it. At some point freedom of speech, even in its most mundane aspect, may come down to a form of courage that may test us all.
